Data Cloud segmentation for marketers: what to use first

Data Cloud segmentation for marketers now covers segments drafted from a plain-language prompt, segments built on other segments, prioritised waterfalls and lookalikes. Our view: the tools are ready before most teams have agreed how to govern them.

Key takeaways

1

Data Cloud segments draw on the unified profile, so no export is needed.

2

Waterfall segments cap marketing pressure only if someone owns the priority order.

3

Agree shared definitions and a review step for AI-drafted segments before you scale.

The decision on the table is how much segmentation you hand to marketers directly, and which rules stay central. Faster segment creation multiplies the number of audiences in circulation. Without shared definitions and a limit on how often each customer hears from you, more segments mean more overlap, more messages per person and results nobody can compare.

Segments in Data Cloud start from the unified profile

Segments in Data Cloud (Data 360) draw on the unified customer profile, so a marketer can combine purchase history, service cases, loyalty status and web behaviour in one audience without an export. Segmenting inside a single marketing tool works differently, because the audience only sees the data that tool holds. That foundation has its own cost and its own business case, and what Salesforce Data Cloud does is the place to weigh it.

We build segments for marketing programmes that reach two million recipients. At that scale the lesson is plain. Definitions decide the quality of a segment long before the tool does.

AI-drafted segments speed up the first version

Data Cloud can draft a segment from a plain-language prompt, a generative feature Salesforce introduced under the Einstein name. A marketer describes the audience in a sentence, for example customers who bought outdoor gear twice and have not opened an email in three months, and gets a draft segment to review and adjust. The time saved on the first version is real.

The review is not optional. The model translates words into filters, and a filter that reads "bought twice" as "viewed twice" produces an audience that looks plausible and is wrong. Treat every AI-drafted segment as a proposal until someone who knows the data model has checked the filters behind it.

Nested and waterfall segments bring order to overlap

Nested segments let you build new audiences on top of existing ones, as supersets, subsets or exclusions. Define "active customer" once and every team that reuses it reports on the same group. That removes one of the most common sources of inconsistent reporting: five teams with five definitions of the same customer.

Waterfall segmentation goes a step further. You rank segments in priority order, and each customer lands only in the highest one they qualify for. Nobody receives the loyalty offer, the win-back offer and the welcome series in the same week. It is the most direct tool for controlling marketing pressure, and it only works if one person owns the priority order.

Lookalikes and segment performance close the loop

Lookalike segments find contacts in your own database who resemble a high-value group, based on the attributes and behaviour of an existing segment. They work when the seed segment is large and clearly defined. A small or loosely defined seed produces a lookalike that mostly reflects noise, so start from your best-understood audience.

Segment performance tracking, which Salesforce calls Segment Intelligence, reports how each activated segment performs across channels such as paid media, email and the webshop, including return on ad spend. Availability depends on your edition and the channels you connect. It answers the question marketers find hardest, what a segment contributed to revenue, provided each channel reports back consistently.

Activation targets decide where a segment is used

A segment sitting in Data Cloud does nothing until it reaches a channel. Activation targets include Marketing Cloud Engagement, advertising platforms such as Google and Meta, and WhatsApp through the Meta connection. Each target has its own matching logic and refresh rhythm, so the same segment can reach a different share of customers in each one. Check match rates per target before you compare campaign results across channels.

Web and in-app content follows a different rhythm. The way segments feed real-time personalisation with Marketing Cloud needs its own design, because content that adapts during a visit cannot wait for a segment that refreshes once a day.

Set segment governance before you scale

Segment governance is what keeps faster segmentation from turning into more noise. Before segment creation spreads across teams, agree these rules centrally:

  • Shared definitions for core audiences, such as active and lapsed customers.
  • A priority order for waterfall segments, with one named owner.
  • A maximum number of messages per customer per week across all journeys.
  • A review step for every AI-drafted segment before its first activation.
  • A naming convention that shows owner, purpose and expiry date.

The frequency limit connects directly to the journey tools in Marketing Cloud Next and its editions, where the Advanced edition can score how often each contact should hear from you. In practice governance is a one-page agreement and a monthly review. We set it up with your marketing team during the build, train the people who will own it and stay on to check segment performance against the KPIs agreed at the start.
