Marketing Cloud Next: what changes for your marketing team

Marketing Cloud Next is Salesforce's marketing automation built on the same platform as your sales and service data, with Growth and Advanced editions and AI agents from Agentforce. Our position: treat it as a decision about where marketing data lives, and pick the edition second.

The decision on the table is whether to move marketing onto Marketing Cloud Next now, later, or not at all. The part that is hardest to reverse is the data foundation: which customer records marketing works from, how consent is stored and how segments are built. Features change with every release. That foundation stays for years.

What Marketing Cloud Next is

Marketing Cloud Next is the generation of Salesforce Marketing Cloud that runs natively on the Salesforce platform. Marketing works from the same customer records as Sales Cloud and Service Cloud, and journeys run on Flow, the platform's automation engine. Segments come from Data Cloud (Data 360), which pulls customer data from every channel into one profile and can also draw on unstructured sources such as documents and service tickets.

For a team new to the subject, what marketing automation does is the place to start. For a team that already runs campaigns, the change is practical: fewer connectors between marketing and CRM, and one place to see what a customer bought, asked and opened. We run campaigns that reach two million recipients, and at that volume the shared data model decides more than any single feature.

Growth and Advanced are editions of the same platform

Marketing Cloud Next comes in two editions. Growth covers email, SMS, forms, campaign flows and real-time segmentation. Advanced adds tools for scale, such as testing whole journeys, two-way SMS and control over how often each contact hears from you.

Moving from Growth to Advanced is an upgrade on the same platform, which makes starting small a low-risk choice. The detailed trade-off, and the trigger for stepping up, is covered in Marketing Cloud Growth versus Advanced.

Agentforce brings AI agents into campaign work

The biggest shift in Marketing Cloud Next is the arrival of AI agents from Agentforce. Salesforce positions these agents for work such as building segments from real-time signals, drafting and adapting content for email, SMS and web, and suggesting changes while a campaign runs. You set the goal and the rules, and the agent proposes or carries out the steps.

How much you hand over depends on two things: the quality of the data the agent works from, and the approval rules you set. A team with clean, unified profiles and clear brand guidelines can let agents draft and test at speed. A team with fragmented data will get fast output built on the wrong audience. Start with review steps in place and loosen them as results earn it.

Where Next fits if you run Engagement or Account Engagement today

Many organisations run ExactTarget (Marketing Cloud Engagement) for business-to-consumer journeys or Pardot (Marketing Cloud Account Engagement) for business-to-business lead nurturing. Salesforce presents Marketing Cloud Next as a convergence of these products onto one platform, so a move does not have to start from zero.

How much carries over depends on your setup. A team with standard journeys and clean CRM data has a light migration. A team with heavy custom code, many data extensions and external integrations faces a real rebuild of those parts. For B2B teams, it is worth comparing Next with what Account Engagement already covers before deciding to switch.

Cost follows usage as much as licences

Parts of Marketing Cloud Next follow a consumption-based model, so the total depends on how you use it. The drivers that compound are the number of contacts you activate, the volume of data you bring into Data 360 and the number of messages you send, plus agent actions where those are metered. Contacts and messages grow with success. The data model setup is largely a one-off effort.

Internal cost is the line most business cases miss. Someone has to own segments, consent and journey logic after go-live. The wider picture of what drives Salesforce Marketing Cloud cost is worth mapping before you compare editions.

What survives if you stop halfway

A clean data model, documented consent rules and a unified customer profile keep their value whatever happens next. They serve sales, service and any future marketing tool. Half-migrated journeys do not, because they leave you running two platforms with two sets of logic.

Marketing Cloud Next is not always the right move. If your Engagement setup is stable, heavily customised and has little need for CRM data, staying put can be the better call for now. If you already run a customer data platform or a data warehouse that feeds your segments, compare that route with Data 360 first.

How we approach a Marketing Cloud Next programme

We work in three phases. Discover maps what your team needs and challenges the assumptions behind the move. Build puts a fixed team on the data model, consent and the first journeys with the clearest return. Run keeps us on board after launch, tracking the key performance indicators agreed at the start.

For teams that want a clear scope from day one, FORWARD's Marketing Cloud accelerator packages that work into a fixed approach. Our Head of Marketing Cloud also runs every Marketing Cloud community event across Belgium and the Netherlands, so the questions other teams face reach our projects early.
