The FORWARD founder story: from Java developer to co-CEO

FORWARD started as Planet of Commerce, a company that Bruno Braes and Kevin Box founded inside the Cronos group. The FORWARD founder story explains habits clients still see today: spot a problem, build the fix, and say it plainly when you have not done something before.

Key takeaways

1

FORWARD grew from a developer's habit of solving problems by building the fix.

2

Every new Salesforce service started with a client asking and FORWARD committing.

3

Setbacks, from a client bankruptcy to a founder leaving, reshaped the company.

A partner's history matters because it shows how the company behaves under pressure. Honesty about what you have not done yet, a "whatever it takes" reflex and a preference for building over talking all trace back to the first years of Planet of Commerce. They also explain why we answer questions about choosing the right Salesforce consultant with behaviour first and credentials second.

A developer who liked building things

Bruno was a creative and geeky kid who wrote his first lines of code at eight. He studied computer science, did an internship in 3D modelling and animation, and received a job offer from an animation company. He chose technology instead and started as a web designer at EDS, a large American IT services company. Within a year he had moved into Java development, and he stayed at EDS for twelve years as a Java developer and architect.

The entrepreneur showed up in the evenings. Bruno freelanced after hours, often until midnight and at weekends. Through a Hasselt media agency, a client needed a digital asset management system, a library for rich media. The systems on the market were expensive and complex. His reaction: "hey, I'm a programmer, how hard can it be to build this myself". Two months later the Virtual Press Lounge was live, a content portal that Belgian and Dutch media houses used for many years to produce their printed programme guides.

Automating a problem, then meeting a better product

After HP acquired EDS, Bruno joined Xplore Group, part of the Cronos group, as enterprise architect for a growing e-commerce company in Hasselt. He spent six years there. The platform in use then needed about three weeks of error-prone server setup before development could start on a new project. Bruno automated it: fifteen minutes of configuration, then scripts that did the job in two hours.

Then the team came across Demandware, a scalable software-as-a-service commerce platform where no one had to set up servers at all. It made the automation obsolete. The team switched focus and booked a Demandware training course. During a break, the trainer read an email aloud: Salesforce had just acquired them. Demandware later became Salesforce Commerce Cloud (Agentforce Commerce).

Planet of Commerce, founded inside the Cronos group

Bruno and Kevin Box had worked together on several projects. Kevin had a business and marketing background, Bruno was the techie, and both thought like entrepreneurs. Within Cronos, you bring an idea and a business plan, convince the founders to co-invest and get the chance to prove yourself. The group takes care of offices, payroll and IT, so a new company can focus on customers from day one.

Planet of Commerce onboarded JBC, Brantano and Torfs as its first customers, and more retailers in Belgium and the Netherlands followed. The founders ended many weeks with what they called Friday evening parking lot meetings, looking back at what had just happened.

Every new service started with a client asking

Commerce customers soon asked how to attract new customers and wake up sleeping ones. That meant Marketing Cloud, whose email engine came from ExactTarget (Marketing Cloud Engagement), and it was new ground. With a push from Salesforce, the company hired its first marketing automation specialist, and Bruno put his own time into the first Marketing Cloud project to make sure it landed. That is where the "whatever it takes" mentality comes from.

CRM followed the same way. When Torfs asked whether the team had Service Cloud experience, the answer was no, with a commitment to make it work. With Torfs' trust and support from Salesforce, the team delivered its first Service Cloud solution, and the partnership later grew to include Salesforce Order Management and MuleSoft.

From Planet of Commerce to FORWARD

Three years in, the company was recognised as one of the first Salesforce multi-cloud solution providers. The name Planet of Commerce no longer fitted a business that covered commerce, marketing and CRM. The new name, FORWARD, came up on one of the daily walks Bruno and Kevin Box took from their hotel to Dreamforce in San Francisco.

The setbacks that shaped the company

Working across three technology stacks was the first challenge, because Salesforce had acquired Commerce Cloud and Marketing Cloud and built CRM itself. The team built its own integration packages to connect them. Then the largest customer went bankrupt, and overnight a large part of the team had no project.

Leadership changed too. When Kevin Box left, the company needed restructuring. Kevin Van der Straeten, who first knew FORWARD as a client, became co-CEO. Growing from start-up to scale-up across several countries meant reinventing the company every year, and Bruno still calls that part the fun stuff.

Where the story stands today

Within four years FORWARD became a Salesforce Summit Partner, and Bruno was invited onto the Partner Advisory Board for Commerce Cloud. The company also won an Implementation Partner of the Year award. Bruno likes to say that geeks are the new rockstars, and Thomas Theunen proved it with a Salesforce Golden Hoodie award.

Learning stays central. Every tribe member who reaches the highest Ranger rank on Trailhead, Salesforce's free learning platform, gets a Trailhead hoodie, and FORWARD Academy works with universities such as PXL to bring Salesforce into the curriculum. How new people find their feet is its own story, told in our approach to onboarding. Today FORWARD works from Hasselt, Kontich, Amsterdam and Valencia.
